Almost every bed bug dog website quotes a number in the high nineties. Nearly all of them trace back to a single 2008 University of Florida study in which dogs worked controlled rooms with planted bugs. It was a real study. It was also a laboratory.
Later field research in occupied apartments found something more useful: detection rates vary enormously from team to team, and the spread between a well-maintained team and a poorly maintained one is far wider than any marketing number suggests. How a Canine Bed Bug Inspection Works
Prepare the space
We send a short prep list in advance. Vacuuming immediately beforehand, strong air movement, open food and recently applied cleaners all degrade a dog’s working conditions. Ten minutes of prep protects the whole inspection.
Work the room
The handler works the dog systematically around the perimeter and furnishings. Dogs work in cycles with rest breaks — a team that runs forty rooms without a pause is not inspecting them properly.
Confirm every alert visually
On an alert, we inspect the indicated area for live bugs, eggs, shed skins or fecal staining. This step is not optional. If a company tells you they treat on the alert alone, you will pay for treatments you did not need.
Report room by room
You get a written result for every room inspected — not just the ones that alerted — with locations, findings and photos where relevant. That record is what you hand to your pest management company.
Re-check after treatment
We do not perform treatments, which means we have no incentive to find something that is not there. A follow-up inspection at the right interval tells you whether the treatment worked.
How to Vet Any Bed Bug Detection Team
Four questions, for us and for anyone else you are considering.
1. Who certified the team, and when?
NESDCA and WDDO are the recognized third-party bodies in the US. Certification is annual, and the dog and handler certify together — a certificate does not transfer to a different dog.
2. Is the team on the public list?
Both organizations publish their certified teams by state. Plenty of companies say “certified” and do not appear. Look it up before you book.
3. What happens after an alert?
The right answer is visual confirmation. “We treat based on the alert” is the wrong answer, and it is expensive.
4. Do they also sell the treatment?
An inspector who also profits from remediation has a conflict. Ask how they manage it, or use an inspector who does not treat.
