Byers K9 Services

Nationwide K9 Detection Services

Byers K9 Services runs six K9 units nationwide; explosives, firearms, narcotics, bed bug and mold detection, plus K9 patrol. Five of them work odor: a handler and a dog moving systematically through a space, finding what a person or a machine would walk past. The sixth works presence.

The Standard

Detection work is easy to sell and hard to do well. The difference between a team that finds things and one that puts on a show is not visible from the outside — it is in current certification, logged blind training, and a written protocol for what happens after an alert. We train year-round, we document every session, and we would rather tell a client what a dog cannot do than win the job by overstating it.

OUR DETECTION UNITS

Six Units. Pick the One That Fits Your Problem.

Each unit has its own page — what the dogs are trained to find, how the work runs on site, and what an alert does and does not mean.

Explosives Detection

Pre-event sweeps and bomb-threat response for venues, campuses, office towers, freight and vehicles. Trained to the six mandatory odor groups under the national explosives detection guideline.

EXPLOSIVES UNIT →

Firearms Detection

Weapons, ammunition and firearms residue in schools, workplaces, venues and vehicles — in the places a metal detector cannot practically go.

FIREARMS UNIT →

Narcotics Detection

Scheduled sweeps for schools, employers and property managers. In Colorado, the first question is whether the dog is marijuana-trained — and that page explains exactly why.

NARCOTICS UNIT →

Bed Bug Detection

Room-by-room inspection for hotels, multifamily, senior living and student housing — catching an infestation at one unit instead of one floor.

BED BUGS UNIT →

Mold Detection

Air testing says mold is present; a dog says where. Non-invasive location work for water events, odor complaints, transactions and post-remediation checks.

MOLD DETECTION →

K9 Patrol Units

Handler-and-dog teams working unpredictable patrol patterns across large ground after hours — yards, lots, construction sites and campuses. The one unit built on deterrence rather than detection.

HOW DETECTION ACTUALLY WORKS

Four Things True of Every Unit We Run

Whatever the target, the fundamentals do not change. If you understand these four, you can evaluate any detection vendor, including us.

Dogs find odor, not objects

This is why a dog finds things sealed inside a container — and also why it can indicate on a bag that held something last week. The target is a scent signature, not a shape.

The alert is passive

Our dogs sit or freeze on odor. They do not scratch, dig or paw at a locker, a mattress, a wall or a person. In an occupied building that distinction matters.

An alert is a lead, not a finding

It tells you where to look. What happens next — a search, a sample, a call to law enforcement — is a human decision made under a policy agreed in advance.

The team is the variable

Certification, blind maintenance training and handler discipline drive results far more than breed or marketing claims. Ask about the specific team assigned to your site.

WORKING WITH US

How an Engagement Starts

1

Tell us the problem, not the product

Describe the site and what you are actually worried about. We will tell you which unit fits, whether it should be recurring or one-off, and whether a dog is the right instrument at all.

2

Agree the protocol in writing

What gets searched, who is notified, what an alert triggers and what gets documented — settled before the first visit and, for schools and employers, reviewed by your counsel.

3

Run the work

Scheduled sweeps, event coverage or targeted response, sequenced to limit disruption. Our handlers do not open containers, search people or detain anyone.

4

Leave a record

A written report every time — areas covered, times, team identification, alerts and resolution. It is the part nobody asks about until the day it matters.

Detection is one part of a wider program. We also provide security guards, K9 patrol units and surveillance services, and our K9s For Students program supports schools across the country.

COMMON QUESTIONS

K9 Detection Services FAQs

Which unit do I need?
Go by the problem. Threats against a venue or event, or a called-in threat, point to explosives. Weapons in a school or workplace point to firearms. Substance policy enforcement points to narcotics. Guest or resident complaints point to bed bugs. A musty smell or a water event points to mold. Ongoing after-hours coverage of a large property is not a detection job at all — that is patrol units. If you are between two, call and describe it.
Can one dog detect more than one thing?
Dual-purpose dogs exist, and some odor panels are commonly paired. But a dog certified on two panels is not automatically as strong on both, and certain combinations are deliberately avoided. Ask specifically what the assigned team is certified on rather than assuming one dog covers everything you need.
What happens when a dog alerts?
We mark the location and hand off according to the protocol agreed before the work started. Our handlers do not open lockers, bags, vehicles or walls, do not search people and do not detain anyone. What happens next is your decision, or law enforcement’s.
Are the dogs safe around students, staff and the public?
Yes. Detection dogs are selected and trained for public environments and use a passive alert. They are working dogs on task, not patrol or apprehension dogs — a different role, with different dogs and different training.
Do you work with schools?
Yes, and school work carries requirements that commercial work does not — written protocol, counsel review, and a clear position on what handlers will and will not do. See K9s For Students.
What areas do you serve?
Nationwide. Call (877) 720-4433 (toll-free) or (303) 565-0352 (local) with your location and we will confirm coverage.
How is this priced?
By scope — square footage or unit count, number of teams, duration and frequency. Recurring programs price differently from one-off response. Call (877) 720-4433 (toll-free) or (303) 565-0352 (local) or email contact@byersk9services.com.
